3 August, London: Wireless Group has today welcomed continued growth for the Group’s portfolio of national digital stations (talkSPORT 2, talkRADIO and Virgin Radio) following the latest results posted by RAJAR. The stations saw an annual increase (up 36%) in listening hours (3.2 million total hours), reaching over 900,000 people (up 7% year on year).
Listeners turned to talkRADIO during this extremely busy quarter that saw a general election, ongoing Brexit analysis and US political commentary, as well as major events and terror attacks in Manchester and London. The station saw quarterly and annual increases in its figures reaching 275,000 listeners, who tuned in for 1.1million hours – an increase of 54%.
Virgin has also had a very strong quarter reaching 364,000 listeners, with 1.1 million listening hours per week, an increase of 8%.
Scott Taunton, Wireless Group’s CEO, said: “In an exceptionally busy quarter for news events I am particularly pleased at the gains made by talkRADIO and that listeners turned to our presenters for their insight, analysis and debate. Virgin also had a solid quarter and the future is very bright having shown two consecutive periods of growth. On the other hand it was a testing quarter for talkSPORT which had to operate on a football-light diet but with additional football rights, the FIFA World Cup and new signings I am extremely optimistic about performance in the coming months”.
Earlier this week, talkSPORT announced a new signing with Joey Barton joining talkSPORT’s flagship Saturday afternoon show 'Matchday Live' and Monday night’s 'Kick-Off show'. With the new season about to kick-off talkSPORT and talkSPORT2 are the homes of football with commentary of over 500 live games, exclusive radio rights to the Sky Bet EFL Championship, League One and League Two along with the Play-Offs, all culminating in the 2018 World Cup…there are busy times ahead and a lot to look forward to.
